福島県の南相馬市にある小高地区は、福島第一原発の事故で、一時期住民が全て避難していた場所です。現在、この場所は人の出入りが許されて、住民も帰ってきて、街の機能を再構築しているように見えます。しかし多くの住民はこの土地を離れ、以前のコミュニティを取り戻しているとは言えない状況です。

私はこの場所で２週間の滞在をして作品を制作しました。ここに住む人とのコミュニケーションを通じて、一番に感じたのは、人がある場所に住み続けることの尊さでした。ここの住民は、この場所に愛着と誇りを持って住んでいました。

日本には、年賀状と呼ばれるグリーティングカードを新年の挨拶に親しい人に送ります。私が福島に滞在していたのは、ちょうど人々がグリーティングカードの準備をする時期でした。

そこで、もしかしたら人と人の間を漂うハガキは、その両者の関係性を象徴する媒体になり得るのかもしれない、というささやかな希望からこのプロジェクトへと至りました。私は小高に住んでいる人々が、遠くに行ってしまった誰かに対してグリーティングカードを出すように即すインタラクティブアートを、郵便局や駅など、街の人々が集まる場所と共同して行いました。

 

The Odaka district in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, is where all residents were evacuated for a time due to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Today, the place is open to people, residents have returned, and the town appears to be rebuilding its functions. However, many residents have left the area and have not yet regained their former communities.

I spent two weeks in this place to create a work of art. Through communication with the people who live here, what I felt most was the preciousness of people continuing to live in a certain place. Residents here lived with attachment and pride to this place.

In Japan, people send greeting cards called nengajo (New Year’s cards) to those close to them as New Year’s greetings. This culture at one time felt like a sort of multiple obligation, and these days many people are trying to stop this tradition. My stay in Fukushima was right around the time when people were preparing their greeting cards.

I came to this project with the modest hope that perhaps the postcards floating between people could become a medium to symbolize the relationship between them. I collaborated with the post office, train station, and other places where people gather in the city to create interactive art that would prompt people living in Odaka to send a greeting card to someone who has moved away.
